t’s time to reimagine this label. I am a self described SP1NSTER™. I am a 43 old woman and well beyond the usual age of marriage. I’ve never prioritized marriage. I am actually content with me. Perhaps I have a bit of Peter Pan syndrome , maybe it’s all of the experiences that I’ve had in life that have shaped my opinion on just trying to enjoying myself, learning myself understanding myself and my life instead of living in the constant pursuit of another’s.

The gender pay gap is a pernicious and deeply entrenched problem in our society. Despite years of progress and advocacy, women still earn, on average, significantly less than men for performing the same job and 54% of employed women are unmarried. This egregious discrimination robs single women of their financial stability, making it difficult for them to secure a foothold in an increasingly competitive economic landscape and somehow, single women continue to rise.

60% of women in the US ages 18-29 are single, 45% of women between the ages of 25-44 will be single by 2030, and a whopping 57% of women are not looking for a relationship at all. In fact I become unnerved by the unnecessary pressure that gets put on a night out. In a world often obsessed with the pursuit of passionate love and intense romantic relationships, there exists a quieter, equally meaningful path to happiness—dating for companionship.

In a world that has long been dominated by traditional expectations and societal norms, the modern spinster is emerging as a force to be reckoned with. Gone are the days when a woman's worth was solely measured by her marital status. Today, she is rewriting the narrative, refusing to conform to society's patriarchal standards, and embracing her newfound agency with unparalleled enthusiasm.

Single women are a significant and growing demographic, representing approximately 26% of the U.S. voting-age population. In the 2020 presidential election, single women comprised 23% of all voters. In this group, there is huge Democratic Party representation: 68% of single women vote Democrat, compared to just 31% who vote Republican. As a growing demographic, these voices deserve to be heard and heeded, not silenced or marginalized.

In 2022, single women owned 58% over 35 million homes owned by unmarried Americans. This represents a significant portion of the total homeownership population and highlights the increasing role of single women in the housing market.

The frequency with which this invasive inquiry is thrust upon single women is not only appalling but indicative of a deeply entrenched bias against them. While some may argue that this question is merely a benign curiosity, it is essential to dissect the motives behind it and the implications it carries. One must first ponder: is this question routinely posed to men with the same fervor and frequency? The answer, is a resounding no.

Capitalism has conditioned us to believe that free time is wasted time and if you aren’t being productive you are failing. Combine those attitudes with the patriarchy, which conditioned both women and men into believing that women who aren’t operating in service to a man or literally anyone other than themselves are egomaniacal selfish and a disgrace to all of the women in the world and our ancestors. That’s changing - By the year 2030, the statistical projection that over 45% of women in America will be single.
